Allman Brothers, Ratdog spread sweet jam

Fans at Mansfields Comcast Center knew what they were in for Saturday during a double pecker featuring the rejuvenated Allman Brothers Band and Grateful Dead ammonium alum Bob Weirs Ratdog. Attendees were happily submerged in a ad valorem tax containing four-spot hours of jam and most of the near-capacity crowd left with ear-to-ear grins.

The Allmans/Dead history goes all the way back to a legendary 1973 collaboration on the Brothers Mountain Jam at New Yorks Watkins Glen Speedway (on a bill that also included the Band). Time has taken its toll on both acts of the Apostles, with Weirs Ratdog moving to the forefront of his career following the 1995 death of Dead guitarist and icon Jerry Garcia, and Allmans keyboardist/singer Gregg Allman winning a recent turn with hepatitis C. Back on hitch, both proved true warriors of the road in separate two-hour sets.

The headlining set from the Allman Brothers Band was staggering for both its brawn and pace. Thirty-nine years after original guitarists Duane Allman and Dickey Betts were throwing solos support and onward with the ease of a backyard softball chuck, current members Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks (nephew of founding drummer Butch Trucks) reignited the groups Southern rock legacy.

The scuttle Statesboro Blues was a powerful showcase for Gregg Allmans signature growl and meaty keyboard chops, only it was the appearance of Norwells Susan Tedeschi, the bride of Derek Trucks and a serious guitar slinger in her own correct, that arrange an early precedent. Her vocal duo with Haynes on Hurts Me Too was splendid and left listeners wondering what kind of kitchen conversations she and her husband must have with electrified instruments.

An extended crosscurrent through the instrumental In Memory of Elizabeth Reed gave each Allman member an chance to reflect and was particularly impressive considering that core drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe were coupled by percussionist Marc Quinones. Things could get dingy quickly with three manpower holding drumsticks, but each was skilled enough to support the others flights of fancy.

For his piece, Weir seemed intent on invoking the spirit of Dylan and the Dead, a hot record from the Grateful Deads union with Bob Dylan that drew hard from a 1987 render they played together in Foxboro. Weir delivered enthusiastic takes on Dylans Maggies Farm and A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall sandwiched around the Deads lysergic landmark Dark Star.

Picking up the pieces from At the Drive-In, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed the Mars Volta and bony petty time ramous out into elements of hardcore, psychedelic stone, and free jazz that expanded on the boundaries of their old work. Although their former band's death ultimately arrived ahead they were able to sincerely capitalise on their mounting commercial triumphs, the Mars Volta at once impressed with their willingness to cast out conventional logic and publicise themselves into new artistic directions instead of opting for the more vendible sounds. (Interestingly, their progressive nonetheless sleek coming gave them the early leash story among critics against their early bandmates in Sparta, the more than emo-leaning of the bands resulting from the rent.) Bixler-Zavala and Rodriguez-Lopez enlisted friends Ikie Owens (as well of the Long Beach Dub Allstars) and Jeremy Michael Ward, and the Mars Volta debuted with the EP Tremulant in 2002. Still, as much of their reputation was reinforced on the intensity of their live show, their highly up-and-coming performances resulted in a wave of grapevine ballyhoo that high-flown the band to near-mythic proportions because so little of their recorded material was available to the populace. Sadly, Ward passed away May 25, 2003, from an unmistakable do drugs overdose at the old age of 27. The Mars Volta had latterly returned from an European spell load-bearing the Red Hot Chili Peppers, where they introduced spic-and-span tracks from the uncut De-Loused in the Comatorium, which was released via Universal the following June. The circle returned in early 2005 with their moment full-length, the challenging birdcall wheel Frances the Mute. They as well issued the hot sic Scab Dates later that year. Leading up to the discharge of third album Amputechture in September 2006, drummer Jon Theodore quit and was replaced by Blake Fleming (wHO had played on early Mars Volta demos). The record record album likewise featured an expanded role for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' John Frusciante.

Well, if the whole gymnastics thing doesn't act upon out, silver medal medal scapegoat Alicia Sacramone could be one the pits of a boxer!

Unbelievable footage of the Team USA star has surfaced on YouTube, showing Alicia throwing a punishing left hook into the face of a beefy, shirtless dude -- who appeared to have asked for it.

The video was reportedly shot during her days at Brown University -- where they apparently go through cases of Natty Light like it's their job!

RevCo Rises Again With Album, Tour

The Revolting Cocks [ tickets ]' new album, "Sex-O Olympic-O," is set to be released Oct. 14 on 13th Planet Records, the label founded by Ministry/RevCo driving force Al Jourgensen.Jourgensen, who produced the new disc, had planned for the album to be RevCo's swan song. However, vocalist Josh Bradford said in a statement that the quality of the material inspired Jourgensen to slightly change plans."I am leaving after this album, and I'm turning it over to a younger generation of RevCos--much like Menudo does or Blue Man Group," Jourgensen said in a statement. "It started in 1983--with me, Luc Van Acker and Richard 23 from Front 242," he said. "There were three of us, and now, I've found these other three young knuckleheads who I think capture the true essence and spirit of being 'a Revolting Cock,' if you will."Jourgensen's vision for RevCo has one condition: in five years, the three current band members, Bradford, Sin Quirin/guitars, and Clayton Worbeck/keyboards, must turn the band over to three other new guys. "They have to find the right people to carry on the tradition--which is a lot of keg parties, beer chugging, throwing up, sexual abnormalities," Jourgensen said.Details of an upcoming Revolting Cocks fall tour to support "Sex-O Olympic-O" are soon to be announced.

"Idol" runner-up David Archuleta signs record deal

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Popular "American Idol" runner-up
David Archuleta has signed a record deal and is expected to
release an album later this year, his new producers at 19
Recordings/Jive Records said on Thursday.

With a record deal in hand, 17-year-old crooner Archuleta
joins past "Idol" also-rans such as Chris Daughtry, Jennifer
Hudson and Clay Aiken who have leveraged their stardom on hit
television show "Idol" into record, film and Broadway fame.

This season Archuleta was widely expected to win the No.
1-rated TV talent show, but he lost to rival David Cook on the
program's final episode in May by 12 million votes.

Simon Fuller, creator of "American Idol" and founder of 19
Entertainment Label Group, said Archuleta instantly won over a
huge audience and has a great future ahead of him.

"It was fascinating to watch David's journey through
'Idol.' He is a genuine pop star, and is a gifted singer,"
Fuller said in a statement.

Daughtry, Hudson and Aiken all lost in past seasons, too.

Daughtry currently has a hit album. Hudson won a supporting
actress Oscar for her role in movie musical "Dreamgirls," and
Aiken has appeared on Broadway in "Spamalot," among his various
credits since "Idol."

The show averaged about 27 million viewers a week this
season.
